My trap arrived quickly and was easy to assemble. Before it arrived, I received and email from Ebung with a new pdf version of the manual. I confess I ignored it. I spent a couple days baiting the trapping area with a few sunflower seeds to get my rat used to the food. Then I put some in the trap but did not arm it; they were gone the next day so I armed the trap. The lights did not operate the way the written manual that came with the trap indicated, so I assumed my trap was broken. I sent Ebung an email describing the problem and I received a reply within two hours from Susan. Susan, in a very kind and gracious way, asked if I had received the new user manual that they had sent via email when I ordered the trap. Ahhhhhhh, yeah, I guess I did.....
So I read the manual and surprise!! The trap lights were working exactly as they should. I put out the trap that night and found my rat dead in it the next morning. Worked like a charm on a very cagey rat!!
In summary:
1) The Ebung trap works great and is very effective at doing what it was designed to do.
2) Ebung customer service (at least Susan) responds quickly and are very helpful at solving your issues.
3) Read the manual that they take the time to send you before the trap arrives! :)
My problem was the large number of tree rats (aka roof rats) in our Oakland neighborhood where most people have fruit trees. They climb trees, jump onto trees, etc just like squirrels but are really nocturnal rats with large ears and eyes. In my case, they completely decimated the figs on my large fig tree. I tried all kinds of bait initially with the ebung device that I read about online for roof rats - dried fruit, nuts, berries, peanut butter, etc. But these rats left it untouched. I tried lot of the things reviewers here recommended - replaced batteries frequently, switched from battery to direct power, moved it to different locations where I've seen them travel, concealed the LED light that might be spooking them, used fresh bait every night, used gloves so I don't leave my scent, etc. Finally I just left the bait in the device but left it turned OFF. The rats then started coming in and eating the bait. So something about the sound of the device maybe, that is spooking them? I would see the rats every evening, scampering along my fence, jumping on the tree and eating the figs right in front of my eyes. I finally left this ON with battery power, strapped it to the ledge on the fence which they use as their 'highway'... till one day, they got inside, ate the bait and left while it was still powered on. That's when I was absolutely certain that the problem is a broken device. And I was just outside the 30 day return window by then. What an absolute waste of money. My advice to anyone buying this - try it for the first few weeks and return it if you're not able to catch any rats.
1. They are technically wild animals , you will have varying success with any trap depending on a huge variety of factors like bait, placement, type of rodent, time of year, and other environmental considerations. There is no silver bullet with any trap.
2. If you don't catch anything, I wouldn't immediately blame the trap. Other traps will work better in certain circumstances. For me, this trap took a while to work, and the reason I believe was since we are very rural in Maine, was that anything new to the environment animals are suspicious of and avoid. After about a month and the weather warming they got brave, and fortune didn't favor the bold in this case for them.
3. Take other actions to increase success. Making the environment in and around the home unfavorable to rodents will force them to get more aggressive and go for the traps. Putting this out while leaving other sources of food and shelter for the little devils is pointless.
But this trap works with those considerations in mind. I would like to see no bright LED on the plug, it actually works against the trap because mice like the dark. The indicator on the trap is sufficient. The extended led on a cord is a great idea. The alarm, for the love of god, make a silence switch for it, it's redundant with the LED I just mentioned anyways.
Update: Mouse death toll is rising to more than 7. I've marked the side of the unit with tally makes like a WW2 tank. I have 3 now and they are all still working.
